Avoidance of Attachment and Awareness of the Now, go hand in hand, but are a bit different.
Attachment to things can cause many issues with Anxiety and Depression. Anticipation of obtaining something or losing something we are attached to causes us to lose our focus on the now, which causes these reactions. I must clarify that there is a healthy and unhealthy level of "attachment" to something, such as goals we strive to achieve. Investment and attachment are intertwined, in that the more you are invested, the more you become attached which is unavoidable and good in many cases.
People with terrible obsessions with "things" will tend to have heart problems from the stress that comes with this attachment. Dealing with the loss of or obsessing over the acquisition of more stuff takes its physical toll and will manifest a variety of health issues, not very different from stress and anxiety over traumatic events. Instead of being aware and present in the moment, the person's thoughts are always on what they have and what they are getting next. Now they are unavailable to those around them, whom they depend on in some fashion. Or they are unaware of an issue that is right in front of their face, that was easily fixed.
Exercise, physical/mental work/problems, meditation and play are the best ways to get locked into the present moment for some mental medicine, dependent on the situation. If possible, not becoming overly attached to anyone or anything, is ideal. Everything is temporary. Balance in life, invaluable.
