Forward: Given the speed of the moon and the changing internal rotations of the Earth, the current concept (based on a roughly 60 years of data, a blip in my opinion) may also change. It is possible, from the effective mass of the Earth changing from internal rotation shifts and affecting orbiting bodies with large masses of their own.
This hypothesis is based on General Relativity and geologic processes of intergalactic bodies and derived applying theories found at Perpetualism.net
Does the earth need the moon to support life on Earth? Perpetualism believes this to be absolute truth. Without the Moon, things on Earth would not be the same as they are.
The first reason drives the second. The Earths core is smaller than or 70% the size of the Moon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth%27s_inner_core. The gravitational dance with the Moon likely stimulates the interior of our planet (much like it affects the oceans) invigorating and perpetuating a molten core that evaporates internal water driving it outwards to ultimately be drawn to the surface by lunar gravity or underground pressures or both.
Secondly, and very crucially, Earth's interior/core needs the moon to produce a powerful enough magnetic field to support life. Without the moon, the earth would likely be exposed to solar radiation from a reduced or potentially removed geomagnetic field. Lunar gravity affecting the core/interior via Geological stressing and assisting in keeping the interior molten stimulates and empowers our shield against the sun according to this hypothesis.
This is evidenced on Mars with it's tiny moons producing little to no surface water and no Magnetic Field.
This is juxtaposed on Venus with no Moon producing little to no Magnetic Field and any surface moisture driven into the upper atmosphere do to surface temperatures from runaway greenhouse effect. It's closer proximity to the sun exacerbates the temperatures and weather patterns making it like a pressure cooker, in a sense.
The Moon may be the perfect shot (Various theories on lunar formation imply a collision of large bodies resulting in the Earth/Moon system), in the perfect spot (solar system "Goldilocks zone"), in the perfect spot (in the galaxy away from dangerous objects (Pulsar, Black hole, etc.) in the perfect spot (within our Galactic cluster, no direct collision or "close exposures"). This type of system may be a rarity.
In closing, care must be taken if humans plan to mine the moon. Changing the balance between these objects too greatly my cause undesirable changes such as reduced geomagnetic field or the moon beginning an inward crash course with our planet. Perpetualism believes that the moon has been with our planet from the first signs of life and has remained here in a similar fashion ever since its formation. The speed of the moon and it's present course slowly moving away will likely change with changes to the earths core behavior and their dynamic relationship perhaps bringing it slowly back towards the earth only to begin moving away again in relation to the status of the Earth's interior.
